West Maui

West Maui has some of the best beaches on the island in our opinion. We visited a beach just a little north of Kapalua, and really enjoyed our time there.   There are lots of hotels and condos in the area, but it feels crowded
in some areas like Napili.  We almost rented a place in Napili and the place looked great, but when we drove by it after we got to Maui you could barely fit a car through the road because it was so crowded.  The towns looked very nice and the scenery in this are is absolutely beautiful.

When you drive the coastline of west Maui you get some great views of the ocean and the sea cliffs so bring your camera with you as there are many places to pull in and get out of your car.

The road along west Maui is kind of a mini version of the Hana highway.  So if you are thinking of driving Hana Highway be sure to drive the coast of west Maui first because if you can handle driving it, Hana will be fine for you to drive, its just longer.

West Maui has many resorts along the beaches.  Kaanapali has almost 4 miles of sandy beaches that are great for swimming and snorkeling. It is great to walk on these white sand beaches and just enjoy the sun and the cool breeze from the ocean.  Then if you get to hot just take a quick dip in the ocean to cool off.  But always pay attention to the signs on the beaches as they warn you of strong currents, powerful waves, and man-o-war in the area.

Napili Bay is another location on west Maui that is good for swimming and snorkeling.  This area is pretty popular with tourist and can seem crowded at times.  But this can be a good thing also if you are a type of person that likes to watch others having fun.

Up by I belive Fleming Beach Park is a place known as the dragon's teeth.  This area is one of the last lava flows on Maui and with the winds hitting the lava flow it caused it to form like the lower jaw of a dragon with its teeth sticking up.  You can hike along the beach and climb some rocks to get to it, but it is worth the short hike to see it.

When you drive north past Kapalua you will get to the area of the road that resembles Hana highway which is on the east side of Maui.  You get some breath taking views while driving through this part of Maui.  If you drive far enough on this road, on the left hand side you will see a large area that you can pull off on.  It just looks like a bare grass field.  Once you get out of the car and start walking towards the ocean, you will see that when you climb down the path to the ocean is a blow hole.  It was one of the things we remember the most about our vacation and we would go back to west Maui and explore some more because there are so many things we missed.
