We didn't spend much time in the northern Maui while we were on
vacation, but it is a popular location for surfers.
The north shore of Maui is famous for its big waves. In the winter months the waves at HOOKIPA BEACH PARK usually get from 10 - 15 foot in height and this makes this area popular with the wind surfers. Hookipa beach park has parking available, restrooms, showers and lifeguards. If you are not experienced in surfing or swimming in strong waves, be sure you just stay on the beach and enjoy watching the surfers. Kahalui is the largest city on Maui and also the location of the Maui airport. Kahalui is the only deep harbor on Maui that allows ships to bring in goods to the island. There really isn't any tourist attraction in Kahalui but this is where we spent our time when we were grocery shopping. While driving out of town towards Kehei you will see fields of surgar cane and if you leave town towards the east you will see pineapple fields. Check out a few of these other Maui Sites:
