North Maui

We  didn't spend much time in the northern Maui while we were on vacation, but it is a popular location for surfers.
The north coastal area of Maui is world-renowned for surfing at Jaws and wind-surfing at Ho‘okipa Beach. Most of the hotels and stores around Pa‘ia reflect the needs of the surfers and their fans. Beyond the town, the north shore presents another entirely different side of this tropical paradise.

In Huelo, a peninsula jutting into the Pacific, is a great location for couples since this area is a romantic piece of paradise. Quiet and solitude are found in the inns of Ha‘iku and along the famous Road to Hana.

On the north shore you will find that the towns are offer true small town character and you won't see any tall buildings. You will find little charming rentals and a laid back lifestyle.

The north shore is popular with body surfers at Baldwin park. This beach has a surf that breaks along its entire length which is what attracts bodysurfers to Baldwin park. Other ammenities include parking, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and lifeguards.

The north shore of Maui is famous for its big waves.  In the winter months the waves at HOOKIPA BEACH PARK usually get from 10 - 15 foot in height and this makes this area popular with the wind surfers.  Hookipa beach park has parking available, restrooms, showers and lifeguards.  If you are not experienced in surfing or swimming in strong waves, be sure you just stay on the beach and enjoy watching the surfers.

Kahalui is the largest city on Maui and also the location of the Maui airport. Kahalui is the only deep harbor on Maui that allows ships to bring in goods to the island.  There really isn't any tourist attraction in Kahalui but this is where we spent our time when we were grocery shopping.  While driving out of town towards Kehei you will see fields of surgar cane and if you leave town towards the east you will see pineapple fields.
