Maui Activities - Hana Highway

If you are not staying in a hotel or Bed and Breakfeast on the east side of Maui then take a drive and explore. There are several activities on the east of side of Maui including horse back riding, hiking, sunbathing on the beaches or just driving Hana highway.  Hana Highway is a great day outing while on vacation in Maui. If you have the time to spend a complete day exploring the east side of Maui then I would suggest taking a drive on Hana highway.  Just know that before you go on this beautiful drive that the Hana highway is not a road that you will be able to travel very fast on.
Hana Highway has close to 600 hairpin curves, dozens of one lane bridges and locations of steep drop offs the side of the road with no guard rails.  It is a great drive to be able to see waterfalls, coastal views and dense rain forests.

Pack a picnic lunch and set off to see some great places along the Hana Highway. I would suggest buying a book about Maui prior to going on your vacation if you are wanting to visit some places off the beaten path.  Like the blue pools which is also off of Hana highway.  It is a short but semi difficult hike to get to the blue pools, but if it has rained in the area they are magnificent.

The black sand beach is also on the east side of Maui and well worth the drive to see.  At the black sand beach you

can also see a sea arch that was formed from the lava flow.  There are many different trSeven Pools Maui Hawaiiails to hike in the area as well with some waterfalls and pools that you can swim in so bring your swimwear and a towel and enjoy the day.

Towards the southern part of Hana highway is the Ohe'o Gulch Pools also known as the seven pools. You can park by the Kipahulu Visitor Center and hike down to the pools. Since it is a national park you will have to pay for a parking pass which is around $5 - $10.  On the hike down to the pools you will see banyan trees and other fruit trees.

Most of the places to stop at and eat are quite pricey on the east side of Maui so be sure to bring a picnic lunch or be prepared to pay $10 - $15 for a hamburger.  We did find a little place to eat that wasn't priced to bad, but we just happened to stumble upon it.  We thought we were just going to go to a convenience store and get a loaf of bread and some lunch meat, but this little outdoor restaurant was next to it and the prices were reasonable so we ate there.
