Haleakala Maui

Haleakala crater is the old dormant volcano on Maui.  We didn't visit it on our vacation until the last day we were in Maui.  We are very glad we took the time to travel up to the top as the view from up there is amazing.
You can see from the north shore to all the way to south Maui.  Take the drive to the top of the summit and enjoy the views.  There are several outlooks on the way up to the summit that you can pull into and enjoy the view of the Maui valley.

Also at the top of Haleakala there are some hiking trails.  If you decide to go hiking be sure to be in good shape as the air is thin at the top.  If you are wanting to some hiking at Haleakala be sure to either do some research online or buy a Maui book that has the trials listed.

Star watching is another popular activity on Haleakala. In fact the park ranger station has star maps available.

There are many activities to do on Haleakala, including watching the sunrise.  Just rememHaleakala crater photober if you decide to go to the top that it is colder up there then the rest of Maui.  A lot of tour companies will pick you up at are hotel or condo for the sunrise site seeing.  Also some of the tour companies offer a combination package of seeing the sun rise and also biking down Haleakala.

Other Maui activities available in the up country of Maui are horseback riding, atv tours, and a zip line tour.  Also there is a winery in the up country that you can tour but remember it closes at 5.  We had intended on going to the winery but never did make it to it on time.
